Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announces estimated number of international visitors to Japan for January 2025 - Significant new monthly record
3,781,200 visitors in January 2025
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has released the estimated number of international visitors to Japan for January 2025. The key points are as follows:
The number of international visitors in January 2025 was 3,781,200, representing a 40.6% increase compared to the same month in the previous year. This figure significantly exceeds the previous record of 3,489,800 in December 2024, setting a new all-time monthly high and surpassing 3.7 million visitors for the first time in a single month.
One of the main contributing factors was the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival), which took place in January this year (compared to February in 2024). This led to heightened travel demand from many Asian markets. Additionally, winter sports tourism drove increased visitor numbers, particularly from Australia and the United States, compared to the same month last year.
Out of the 23 surveyed markets, South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia achieved their highest-ever monthly visitor numbers. Furthermore, 17 markets - including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Nordic region, and the Middle East region - recorded their highest-ever January visitor numbers.
